The Beverly Hillbillies was one of the top sitcoms of the 60's. Not only a Wednesday night staple for years, but a popular show in syndication even while it was still active. 274 episodes were produced during its 9 seasons. The Beverly Hillbillies was the first of several rural-themed, and fish-out-of-water themed, shows aired on CBS in the 60's. These type of shows became a big part of the CBS lineup until mid-1971 when CBS programming head Fred Silverman instituted his rural-purge and pulled the plug on all of them. The timing was probably right as the show made its debut in 1962 and by 1971 America had changed drastically while the show still had a very late 50's / early 60's feel to it (not that that is necessarily a bad thing). It's a nice sunny and warm morning here in Florida so I think I'll take my coffee and go sit out by the cement pond.
